3 Reasons you must have a wedding rehearsal

You’ve been imagining the big moment all your life: your bridesmaids and groomsmen walking arm in arm, awaiting you under a beautiful arch, surrounded by breathtaking flowers. Your groom waiting for you at the end of the aisle, smiling and beaming, tears in his eyes. Your parents by your side, full of pride and joy as they walk you towards your happiest future. (Is anyone else getting choked up, or just me?)

There’s no doubt about it: your wedding ceremony is one of the grandest, most memorable moments of your life — and, of course, you want it to feel like a blissful, walking-on-clouds dream.

But (not to kill your buzz!) the path to creating that special moment is a long one, full of planning and organizing, and one of the most essential steps is your wedding rehearsal. Here’s why you must be sure to conduct a rehearsal of your ceremony before the big day!

To ensure everyone knows where to be (and when)

When you’re sitting in the front row, wedding ceremonies seem simple. Walk, pause, stand, repeat, until the bride and groom have their major, life-changing moment. But if you’ve ever been behind the scenes, you’ll know it’s never as seamless as it seems.

Your wedding party has to know when (and where) to walk; your pianist or DJ has to know when to hit play; and your family and officiant need to be on top of what’s going on. With so many people involved, it’s beyond tricky to successfully describe in an email what needs to happen. Your safest bet is to gather your loved ones and give it a real-life try, giving you the time and space to correct issues and challenges as they occur.

To get used to the space and find your way around

It matters where you rehearse. Music and moments must coordinate, people must know their places, and the space must be familiar. That’s why I recommend conducting your wedding rehearsal in the same venue as your wedding will take place, rather than off site — it ensures a more flawless execution and a deeper understanding of the who, what, where, when for everyone involved. Also… it’s so fun and exciting to sneak-peek the space, and it’s a bonus excuse for celebration!

To get your wedding coordinator and wedding party on the same page

When it comes to the execution of your ceremony, your wedding coordinator will be your saving grace. Instead of having your cousin waiting in the wings, telling everyone when to walk and where to go (or, even scarier, leaving it up to each member of the wedding party to determine when to walk and when to pause), your wedding coordinator is the one who will give the go-ahead.

They’ll indicate to the officiant, nod to the musician, and send each member of the wedding party down the aisle at the perfectly rehearsed time. That includes you, the bride and groom, to ensure your cherished moment makes the romantic, heartfelt impact you’ve imagined — and it all starts with the wedding rehearsal to make it flow effortlessly.
